ENGLISH VERSION
On the 4th of June, my sister and I made our appearance on the set of a British series( which I cannot yet mention here). Our day started at 5:30 AM when a Bolt picked us up, along with another woman, in Pender Gardens. Once we arrived at the hotel—behind which the set was arranged—the wardrobe and styling crew began setting up our costumes, hair, and makeup. I was stepping into the role of Rosa, the Bar Manager, while my sister was to play a glamorous beach passerby. This was all we knew about who we were supposed to embody until we finally saw ourselves in the mirror, complete with name tags, costumes, hair, and makeup, ready to perform on set.
Once we were ready, we awaited our call while getting to know the other extras—a few of whom were incredibly cool, fresh, and wonderfully extravagant in both look and spirit. Personally, I felt like I was stepping into the shoes of a funny, American Lizzie McGuire.
When we began making our way toward the set, I could not believe my eyes. The location, a small open cove behind the Mellieħa Bay Hotel, had been completely transformed into the Riviera—a vibrant Costa Rican beach. Everything was a surprise to my eyes: from the towering palms decorated with bright, glowing pink flowers, to the wooden open bar nestled in the background. It was ornamented with the most tropical and exotic fruits and vegetables imaginable: bananas, pineapples, avocados, mangoes, coconuts, durian, feijoa, finger lime, guava, kiwano, litchi, maracuja, papaya, passion fruit, pitahaya, and plátano.
A few meters from the sand, a steel platform stood above the sea where performers could walk by or sit on chairs arranged under umbrellas. To make the scene as realistic as possible, background actors were stationed across the beach, sitting comfortably under umbrellas or the bar roof, reading newspapers, nursing their drinks, and whispering among themselves. Two extras in particular—a middle-aged Black man from London and an elderly Polish man sitting in the right-hand corner—sat facing the sea, comfortably reading their newspapers and sipping prosecco.
Dominating the central space were the main actors, including the protagonist of the British series The Good Doctor. Among them were two British women—one of whom, a Black woman, was holding a beautiful, mixed-race, one-year-old child—accompanied by a cute, brown French poodle with a wagging tail.
When the scene was about to start, I (as Rosa, the bar manager) and Hector (a German guy playing the supervisor) stepped into the Costa Rican-themed Riviera bar. As we did, I remember Hector facing me and uttering with great fervor, "Hey, this could be the first episode of Rosa and Hector: Partners in Crime in Riviera, a Costa Rican Lido!" That could honestly be an iconic and hilarious concept.
The shooting began with us, the bar staff, roaming around as busy as bees in the service area, taking orders from the counter, and happily greeting the guests who were chilling there. Two young chiselled physique boys on set, a crowd of young guys serving as the bar staff made appear as if in the set of Bay watch or a fun Disney Channel movie. After a few takes, a woman from the crew positioned me in a beautifully decorated little corner on the left side of the bar. From there, I would be visible to the main camera for the shooting of the scenes, all while continuing to assist the rest of the young staff crew with their demanding requests for cocktails to serve to the beach guests.
I truly loved the Costa Rican ambiance, I connected deeply with a few of the people there, and I absolutely loved playing my part as Rosa in the shoot.

Il 4 giugno, io e mia sorella abbiamo fatto la nostra comparsa sul set di una famosa serie britannica (che tuttavia non posso menzionare qui adesso). La nostra giornata è iniziata alle 5:30 del mattino, quando un'auto di Bolt è venuta a prendere noi e un'altra donna a Pender Gardens. Una volta arrivate all'hotel — dietro il quale era stato allestito il set — la troupe si è messa al lavoro per sistemare i nostri costumi, il trucco e i capelli. Io dovevo immedesimarmi nel ruolo di Rosa, la direttrice del bar (Bar Manager), mentre mia sorella doveva interpretare una glamour passante in spiaggia. Questo era tutto ciò che sapevamo sui personaggi che dovevamo incarnare, finché non ci siamo guardate allo specchio con i cartellini con i nomi, i costumi, i capelli e il trucco pronti per andare a scoprire il nuovo set di scena.
Una volta pronte, abbiamo aspettato che ci chiamassero sul set e, nel frattempo, abbiamo iniziato a fare conoscenza con le altre comparse — alcune delle quali erano davvero fantastiche, con un look e uno spirito fresco e piacevolmente stravagante. Personalmente, mi sentivo un po' nei panni di una divertente Lizzie McGuire.
Quando abbiamo iniziato a incamminarci verso il set, non potevo credere ai miei occhi. La location, una piccola baia nascosta dietro il Mellieħa Bay Hotel, era stata completamente trasformata nella Riviera: una vivace spiaggia della Costa Rica. Tutto è stato una sorpresa per i miei occhi: dalle alte palme decorate con luci e brillanti fiori rosa, al bar all'aperto in legno posizionato sullo sfondo. Era ornato con la varietà di frutta e verdura esotica e tropicale più incredibile che si potesse immaginare: banane, ananas, avocado, mango, cocco, durian, feijoa, finger lime (storace), guava, kiwano, litchi, maracuja, papaya, frutto della passione, pitahaya e platano.
A pochi metri dalla sabbia, c'era una piattaforma d'acciaio sospesa sul mare, dove i performer potevano passeggiare o sedersi sulle sedie disposte sotto gli ombrelloni. Per rendere il tutto ancora più realistico, alcune delle persone presenti sulla scena erano state posizionate in varie zone della spiaggia, sedute comodamente sotto gli ombrelloni o sotto la rustica tettoia del bar mentre leggevano il giornale, sorseggiavano un drink o sussurravano tra di loro. Due in particolare — un uomo nero di mezza età proveniente da Londra e un anziano signore polacco seduti nell'angolo a destra — se ne stavano di fronte al mare a leggere tranquillamente i loro giornali, mentre bevevano prosecco e discutevano sottilmente di affari commerciali.
A dominare lo spazio centrale vi erano delle beach cabane sulle quali sdraiati vi erano gli attori principali. Tra loro c'erano il protagonista principale della serie The Good doctor e due altre attrici britanniche; una di loro, una donna nera, teneva in braccio un bellissimo bimbo di un anno, mulatto, accompagnato da un adorabile bulldog francese marrone che scodinzolava felice.
Quando la scena stava per iniziare, io (nei panni di Rosa, la direttrice del bar) ed Hector (un ragazzo tedesco che interpretava il supervisore) siamo entrati nel bar della Riviera dall'atmosfera costaricana. Mentre lo facevamo, ricordo che Hector si è girato verso di me e mi ha detto con grande enfasi: "Ehi, questo potrebbe essere il primo episodio di Rosa e Hector: Partner nel crimine nella Riviera, un lido della Costa Rica!".Sentivo quella potesse essere un'idea davvero iconica e divertente.
Le riprese sono iniziate con noi del personale del bar che giravamo indaffarati come api nell'area di servizio, prendendo ordinazioni dal bancone e salutando allegramente i clienti che si stavano rilassando. Sul set c'erano due ragazzi dal fisico scolpito e un gruppo di giovani che interpretava lo staff del bar che faceva sembrare tutto come sul set di Baywatch o di un divertente film di Disney Channel. Dopo alcuni ciak, una donna della troupe mi ha posizionata in un delizioso angolo decorato sul lato sinistro del bar. Da lì mi accingevo a servire il resto dei giovani dello staff con le loro varie 'fake richieste di cocktails'.
Ho amato profondamente quell'atmosfera costaricana, ho legato molto con alcune delle persone presenti e ho adorato interpretare la mia parte come Rosa in questa produzione.
